Tanja Koljonen

In my work the paradox of humanity appears in the simultaneous presence of rationality and instincts, control and freedom. Opposites create tension and call for communication. Language can be seen as our prime instrument for reasoning through which we gain logical thought. In contrast, images that do not necessarily possess any rational or linear order, can be seen as vehicles for instincts and intuition. When dialogue between the textual and the visual continues further, fragments of text start to resemble images and vice versa. By cutting, covering, erasing or rearranging I seek to disturb the rational order of things and to question language as the typical feature that usually distinguishes humans from animals.
