Jyrki Parantainen at Fondamenta by Artissima

Jyrki Parantainen at Fondamenta by Artissima

Jyrki Parantainen is presented in the Main Section of Fondamenta.

Fondamenta is a project based on the work of a fair in progress, to experiment with new ways of meeting and communicating, reacting to the transformations of the present. It is coordinated by the curators of Artissima 2020 and produced with galleries for galleries, which are the fundamental "fondamenta” (foundations) of the fair, the heart and fulcrum of the art market.

Dates: Online until 5 July 2020

Jyrki Parantainen: MAA (1991)

We at Persons Projects feel privileged to have the opportunity to introduce you to the edition box "MAA” by Jyrki Parantainen. First hand produced and signed in 1991, we feel compelled to rerelease the remaining editions to commemorate the exhibition Poetic Realities (up until the 25 June 2020).

This series consists of 11 photographic images from Parantainen’s Earth-Series (1981-1991) and reveals his earliest interventions into the Finnish landscape in a highly individual way.
These images reflect Parantainen’s unique process of working from his choice of sites to the laborious effort to integrate other materials into the works. His visceral combinations of different physical elements such as dry ice and ignited gasoline, create a surreal visual experience. He also used various organic materials from milk to chalk stone, ice and fire lit torches to transform his selected environments. Parantainen created these personal landscapes for the sole purpose of photographically capturing that one specific moment when these various elements merge together to form a Land Art experience.

Eeva Karhu: Polku | Paths

Eeva Karhu: Polku | Paths

Persons Projects is pleased to share the news about Eeva Karhu's publication Polku / Path. It is the first book-form presentation of her art.

Publisher: Parvs Publishing Ltd, August 2020
Texts: Timothy Persons (Foreward), Alistair Hicks
Format: 24 x 22 cm
Pages: 128
Language: English; Finnish
ISBN 978-952-7226-59-9

Through the layered structure of her photographs, Eeva Karhu reflects on time and its cyclic nature, using multiple exposures as her technique for recording time’s passage. Her art engages in the study of perception and cognition. The human eye and memory are not like a camera, which records everything unselectively, because the experiences relayed by our visual receptors are always coloured by our emotions and other sensory impressions. "I walk in a circle, on a path with no beginning or end. I photograph this path, where each new beginning is the horizon of the previous one. By layering my photographs, they form a collective image that documents my journey. In a sense, I record time and in so doing, I continue its movement forever.”

Sanna Kannisto: Observing Eye

Persons Projects is pleased to inform you about the new publication by Sanna Kannisto: Observing Eye (Hatje Cantz, 2020).

Publisher: Hatje Cantz, June 2020
Graphic design: Juha Nenonen
Format: 25 x 29 cm
Language: English
Pages: 144
ISBN: 978-3-7757-4791-2

Sanna Kannisto’s métier is nature photography. Like her role models, she considers herself both a scientist and an artist. And, in fact, her analytical gaze is in no way inferior to her creativity and passion. She creates moments of unusual beauty that also shed light on what has been previously concealed. Kannisto has her own method for taking pictures of birds, photographing the animals in front of a brilliantly lit, white background. Removed from their usual surroundings, every detail appears in matchless clarity, allowing for precise study. At the same time, this results in a unique visual aesthetic: the feathers glow brightly, the beating wings take on a majestic quality, and the deep black eyes of the birds seem to gaze hauntingly at the camera. The patience required to produce these pictures has paid off , since it is hard to imagine more beautiful photographs of birds.

Santeri Tuori – Time Is No Longer Round

Publishing Date: Feburary 2020
Publishing House: Hatje Cantz
Language: English
ISBN 978-3-7757-4701-1

"At first glance the photographer Santeri Tuori’s pictorial world appears to be timeless. On second glance, however, it becomes clear what is going on. Tuori’s compositions of trees, tangled branches, and clouds are sophisticated montages made up of countless photos arranged sideby-side or on top of each other. This results in nearly abstract, fascinatingly complex images of nature; because it harmonizes with the sublime depiction of nature, the process of seeing transcends itself."

An Image as Part of the Whole | Zofia Kulik at Białystok Interphoto 2019

Zofia Kulik's art works will be exhibited at the International Photography Festival Białystok Interphoto 2019.

"For many years I have been creating a photographic archive of images.
Only its small part can be found in my collages. In a complex composition simple photos lose their photographic ‘identity’ and individuality. They are subordinated to the external whole.
This arrangement is a network of relations between images on various subjects and of a different scale. This exhibition will present both the WHOLE compositions and the photographic ELEMENTS which make them." – Zofia Kulik

Jorma Puranen at Purdy Hicks Gallery in London

Jorma Puranen at Purdy Hicks Gallery in London

Purdy Hicks Gallery in London is exhibiting a solo show with the works of Helsinki School artist Jorma Puranen .

During a residency at Harewood House in Yorkshire to celebrate the tercentenary of the great landscape designer Capability Brown, Jorma Puranen photographed Harewood's landscape and lake, one of Brown's most significant contributions. Long exposures were taken, mirrored in a painted board prepared by the artist, resulting in painterly, fragmented impressions of nature in which the ground, the brushstroke, and the reflection are inseperably superimposed.

In contrast to this carefully considered and quintessentially English landscape is Puranen's Icy Prospects series. Here the artist demonstrates his deep fascination for and knowledge of the wilderness of the Arctic, creating a relationship between the philosophical concept of the sublime terror of the forces of nature and his own experience of life in these regions.

Opening: Thursday, October 20, 5 – 8 pm
Duration: October 21 – November 16, 2016
Venue: Purdy Hicks Gallery
Address: 25 Thurloe Street, London SW7 2LQ

Niko Luoma and Arno Minkkinen: The Finnish Frame of Mind

Niko Luoma and Arno Minkkinen: The Finnish Frame of Mind

Arno Minkkinen and Niko Luoma are having a duo show at Galerie Valérie Bach in Brussels. In 2009, Galerie Valérie Bach organised a solo show with the Finnish photographer Arno Rafael Minkkinen. For his second exhibition at the gallery, they propose a Finnish duo, comparing Minkkinen´s black and white self-portraits to his Finnish colleague Niko Luoma´s abstract compositions. Both artists are certain at one thing: it is about pure photography; what the lens sees is what the photograph becomes. Nothing more. No tricks.
